I don’t care how sexy the pink bra is, if it doesn’t fit you are heading for trouble. I don’t mean to sound like your mother but a bra that doesn’t fit you properly can cause back pain, muscle tension and headaches. Not so sexy after all.

Wearing lingerie that fits properly, accentuates your attributes and hides trouble areas; thank goodness for that. As the foundation of your outfit, bras that fit correctly affect your posture as well as the health of breast tissue.

A bra that is too loose will allow breasts to sag and cause back problems due to strain. If it’s too tight, the elastic and underwire can pinch and poke sensitive areas leading to discomfort, bruising, and even breast health problems, such as blocked milk ducts.

And if you’re navigating your way through the puberty storm, then it’s even more important that you wear a bra that fits. Since teens are still growing, the strains caused by the wrong bra can lead to life long problems with posture and back pain.

If you would prefer to do it on your own, then try this: run a measuring tape all the way around your body just underneath your breasts and take a measurement in inches.

The tape measure needs to be horizontal and snug. Your arms should be down against your sides. If you get an odd number, then round up to the nearest even one. This is now your band size.

Now to determine your cup size. The cups are sized relative to the band. Keeping the measuring tape straight and snug, measure around the fullest part of your bust. Subtract this measurement from your rib cage measurement. The difference is the basis for your cup size; each inch of difference is equal to one cup size. Here is a basic guide:

Less than 1 inch = AA cup

1 inch = A cup

2 inches = B cup

3 inches = C cup and so on.

After you have the right size, half the battle is won. The next thing to think about is why the bra is needed. Yes, believe it or not there are other purposes for the brassiere than seducing your man. Is it for support, coverage, comfort or athletics? Bras come in a variety of fits and fabrics. There are different styles of bras designed for specific body types, fashions and activities.

Your first bra

It’s a milestone in every gal’s life. When you have just started to develop breasts, it’s time for a training bra that, is suited for breasts that do not yet fit the standard bra sizes. But if you’re an early bloomer, lucky girl, and your breast size warrants a full fitting bra, then you should wear one, even if you are very young.

Light support bras

These bras usually have no underwire and are good for girls with smaller breasts. They are less constricting than full support bras and many girls feel that they are more comfortable. Because they are wireless, they offer less shaping than other bras and are most flattering on trimmer figures. They come in padded and unpadded versions. Which one you choose is really a matter of personal preference.

These bras usually have an underwire or plastic boning holding them up. They are a must for those with larger cup sizes. They offer a shapely cut and have a structured build. These also come in padded or unpadded versions and are flattering on any figure type.

Push up bras

These are ideal when you want to show off your girls as they are all about revealing some cleavage. These bras lift the breasts and add shape to them with extra padding. Some more innovative push-up bras use silicone inserts or water sacks to imitate the fullness of natural breasts. They are said to lift and separate, creating a full cleavage look on breasts of all sizes. These bras always offer lots of support.

Sports bras

Of all bras, the sports bra is probably the most important one for growing teens to have. Sports bras stop the breasts from moving during athletic activity. Breast tissue is very delicate and growing breast tissue needs to be protected during high-impact exercise. Even girls with smaller breasts should invest in a good sports bra if they participate in any sports.

It’s rumoured in ladies circles that some 85% of women out there don’t wear a bra best-suited to their breasts or their bodies. And it doesn’t matter what type of body shape you have, there is no excuse. Trust me when I tell you, nobody, but nobody, will ever be as close to you as your girls. Look after them.
