II Operations:

1 Fix of CCD: just as per the picture, connect the power supply(Attention: the supply of CCD is DC6V3A, don’t connect to the polariscope power),the focus of lens is corrected before leaving the factory, if the image is not sharp enough after fixing ,then rotating the lens up and down slowly until there present a sharp image.

2 Modify the polariscope: DC3V supply connect to polariscope, switch on and turn the polarizer, until the full dark on the screen. put the sample on the platform, then rotating the platform 360 degree and observing the polarization of the sample.

(1)If the gemstone full-dull(namely full dark), it means there is no light in field of view. Turn the gemstone, operate repeat, if present full=dull all the time, it can defined that this is Homogeneous, namely singly refraction gemstone, it is classified Equiaxed crystal series or Amorphous;

(2)If the tested gemstone present looming phenomenon, means full-dull, it defined Heterogenerous(uniaxial crystal or biaxial crystal)gemstone.

(3)Jade consist of Heterogenerous mineral during 360 degree revolving it keeps bright all the time, this phenomenon called Collection of extinction, such as Agate and ect;

(4) If the sample under the orthographic polarized state, there present irregular light and shade band, or irregular halo color, and also the same if change direction, it shows that the sample possess dual-refraction and it called Anomalous extinction.

III Take picture and operations:

This type of polariscope with high quality CCD, standard VGA signal out-putting, no need to connect to PC also can present images or video by connect with a screen, projector and etc.It can save pictures and review on the screen, good instrument for teaching communication, adopt 25FPS high frequency image transmission; 1280X1024 resolution presence, the video that shows to customers get a better improve. Users can add the cursor on the screen, USB flash disk save pictures directly, and also adjust exposure, color by operating the remote controller. After saving the images then open it and make a further process, detail steps: Insert USB flash disk→put in the small CD disk→open it →dual-click UMC.EXE →present the software window →click “open folder” →select the USB flash disk that you saved “VM130C” →click the file →present black and white image →click “convert” →turn to color images →to process easy →click “save” →select JPG File(.jpg) →save to the file you select and it can opened by “ACDsee” later .

IV Operation for interference ball: This type of polariscope with interference ball, used to observe the interference pattern of the heterogenerous gemstone and identified the axiality and optical sign.

1 Rotating the up polarizer until the field of view shows full dark, namely orthographic state;

2 Put the heterogenerous gemstone on the platform, interference ball upper the sample 0.5cm, revolving the platform until see the axis graph.

3 part of spheric large particles can see the interference patterndirectly.

V The polarization of Commonly gemstone

1 Regular extinction gemstone: Crystal, Moonstone, Scapolite, Cordierite, Topaz, Tourmaline, Peridot, Diopside, Apatite, Cymophane, Corundum family of gemstones and its synthetics and Zircon and etc.

2 Collection of extinction gemstone(full bright): Nephrite, Jade, Agate, colored marble, Rhodochrosite, Devitrified glass and etc.

3 Full-dull gemstone(full dark): Glass imitation, Tektites, Opal, Fluorite, Andradite, Spinel and etc.

VI Attentions

1When use the video polariscope the surrounding light should be bright enough, so it get a best performance.

2The slit of gemstone maybe interfere the effect, so have to attention to distinguish

3To the gemstone with high refraction, put it into the liquid with equivalent refrigent index, to lower the reflectivity of the gemstone surface, then to obtain the regular observation.

4Opaque or small particles is not suitable for polariscope testing.
