Radiometric and spectrometric instrument PRS – 01 is created taking into account the IAEA recommendations stated in the IAEA TECDOC-1312, (2002) “Detection of Radioactive Material at Borders”, which was jointly sponsored by IAEA, WCO, EUROPOL, and INTERPOL, and UNECE document “Recommendations on Monitoring and Response Procedures for Radioactive Scrap Metal”.

It is designed for determination of qualitative and quantitative composition of gamma-emission radionuclides in field and in laboratory conditions, search of radioactive sources and anomalies, gamma-survey of surface.

The spectrometer is designed for operation in wide range of temperatures, in vibration conditions, in conditions of raised humidity and dusting. The spectrometer can be used in rigid external conditions: by emergency, in situ, in mobile laboratories, in industrial and remote premises, for food control and so on.

THE RADIOMETER-SPECTROMETER PRS-01 ALLOWS:

Carry out field measurements of gamma-emission radionuclides’ activity in ground for design of maps of pollution in wide range.

Register changes of speed of account from detector for calculating of doze rate with step-type behavior up to 1 sec. during movement of the laboratory or the operator.

Carry out measurements of specific activity in the samples of food and other environments in laboratory conditions with shield and without it.

Carry out search for radioactive sources and anomalies.

IN SITU MEASUREMENT WITH PRS-01 ALLOWS:

detection, localization and identification of radioactive and nuclear materials by their gamma-emissions;

equivalent gamma-ray dose rate evaluation;

fissile or radioactive material composition estimation;

detected gamma-ray pulse-height distribution measurement;

PRS for in situ has two main operation modes - «SEARCH» AND «IDENTIFICATION»

«SEARCH» MODE:

detection, localization and identification of radioactive and nuclear materials by their gamma-emissions;

equivalent gamma-ray dose rate evaluation in the 0.04 – 3.0 MeV energy range;

PRS LCD graphic and digital results imaging;

sound informing the operator (through ear-phone) on gamma-ray dose rate changes with pulsed signal;

informing the operator on exceeding the established dose rate level by launching the instrument handle vibration and pulsed LCD brightening;

automatic alarm level setting depending on the monitoring point background level;

logic TTL (0/1) alarm signal feeding to the instrument connector.

«IDENTIFICATION» MODE:

In the «IDENTIFICATION» mode PRS realizes such functions:

identification of possible radioactive and nuclear materials’ composition by their gamma-emissions using special gamma-ray analysis software;

detected gamma-ray pulse-height distribution measurement (up to 100 spectra setting and nonvolatile storage);

possibility of computer PRS control and adjustment;

computer link via standard ports.

CHARACTERISTIC

Radiometric and spectrometric instrument PRS – 01 is performed as a single unit combining the detection unit and the information processing unit with simplified clipboard and LCD and installed software for the instrument operation control as described earlier.

Nuclear material detection level mP for the nuclear material standard sample (SS)* due to the dose rate changes beginning 0.25 µZv/h up to the tolerable background level P, none the worse than calculated using the formula: mP = m25 ×(P/0,25)3/4 ,

*nuclear material SS means:

uranium sample with mass m25 = 3 r and uranium mass fraction none the less than 99,75% and uranium 235 enrichment none the less than 89%, or

plutonium sample with mass 0.03 r and plutonium mass fraction none the less then 98% and plutonium-239 content none the less than 93.5% and plutonium-240 mass fraction no more than 6.5%

Experimental tests proved these characteristic.

CARRY OUT MEASUREMENTS OF SPECIFIC ACTIVITY IN THE SAMPLES OF FOOD AND OTHER ENVIRONMENT SAMPLES WITHOUT SHIELD.

The radiometer-spectrometer PRS-01 has the same detector unite as SEG-001 “AKP-S”-63 and allow determines activity of different samples in the fiend in 4p geometry in Marinelly vessel.

It is possible if to connect PRS-01 with any notebook or PC and process spectra with software “AkWin”.
